After installing the intake i now notice how loud what I'm assuming is the waste gate opening dumping boost once i let off the throttle? The other day I had to move my 7500lb camper. While on the highway climbing a small grade maintaining 60mph in 4th gear I was getting the same sound as if the waste gate was dumping boost while i was still on the throttle?? Is this normal?? Any help will be very much appreciated!
The S&B is a real breather, and because of this - it allows more "noise" through as well. The turbo has always made that noise, but the old air filter was restrictive enough to "silence" it. I had an AIS, which breathes nice and is dead-silent... but doesn't breath quite as nice as the S&B. I ran quietly along, blithe to the party taking place just feet away - then installing the S&B was like moving into an apartment with thin walls.
You can minimize the noise by installing pipe insulation around the opening to the fender, and some form of foam padding on top of the plexiglass (which makes a great resonating drum). There is no getting rid of the turbo whistle out the front, but it can be dimmed to the point of "subtle". I have done so with my 38R (notoriously-loud whistler).
You will never hear the wastegate on a 7.3 turbo...
What you were hearing was turbo surge/stall... Time to look at a compressor wheel upgrade to get rid of the surge, not much you can do with the stall. Its pretty normal, you can just hear it now.
