I've got an '88 Bronco 5.8 C-6. It will start if I jump the starter solenoid (relay). I only get 6 volts going to the S terminal on the relay. I don't know if that's enough. I replaced the relay with a cheap Pep Boys/Checker model with no change. I was told those cheap relays sometimes don't do the trick, so I bought one from Ford which also didn't work. The neutral safety switch was replaced several months ago, and I put in a new ignition switch. The battery and cables are all new. The only sound I get when I turn the key is the fuel pump relay. Any ideas?
A short no..but a corroded or loose or dirty connection can cause a resistance which reduces the voltage.
Try removing and cleaning the small red/blue striped wire on the starter relay. Then check the voltage...or try to start the truck.
If still no good start tracing the red/blue wire back and find where it is no good.
That is correct. When I turn the key to start, the reading at the red/blu wire going to the S terminal shows 6 volts. The wire is clean and has good contact at the solenoid, but I will trace it back to the ignition switch and see if its bad. Thanks for the responses.
Is it possible that the link between the lock cylinder and the ign switch in the steering column is broken? I have seen many of them that would turn on the ignition but not move the switch far enough to crank the motor.
Or, the start cable from the ignition switch has excessive resistance. I have only seen this in vehicles with tilt columns.
Check the start cable voltage at the ignition switch (it should be 12+ volts). If it is less than that at the solenoid, then look for a corroded connection at the firewall or an internally broken wire.
