Fuel Pressure Test Question

I need to test fuel pressure in my truck as to rule out an issue with the truck chugging.

I purchased a fuel pressure gauge with a long enough hose to see while driving, but fitting it is an issue, it doesn't have the proper fittings for the back of the fuel bowl.

I can go to the hardware store and get the right size fittings but I was wondering if I needed a special fitting with a shrader valve in it to allow fuel into the gauge or will the fuel pressure be enough and the valve in the tester is just there to make sure it holds pressure once it gets a reading .

Thanks

T

You need a -4 ORB male adapter to whatever thread your gauge uses, probably 1/8" NPT. Most hardware stores won't have that, but most hydraulics shops will.

Removed valve from fuel pressure regulator to test flow of fuel and it was flowing during cranking and stopped when turned off. Diagnosing fuel pressure regulator is that a valid test during crank no start scenario?

probably want to post your question in the F150 forum as the 7.3 diesel is a completely different animal.

There are two ports on the back of the fuel filter housing. One is the bowl pressure and the other is the outlet pressure that goes to the heads after the check valve. Make sure you're testing the outlet pressure; it's possible to have the correct bowl pressure and for the truck to still not start. The outlet port will be the one on the passenger side, both have the same threads.

This is a fuel pressure test thread but it's in the 99 to 03 superduty diesel forum. with the truck you have in the subject line of your post I think you want the 87 to 96 f150 forum. Those guys over there will know a lot more about your truck and how to help you.
