For a while now I have been interested in doing some custom flares with paint. Specifically lace and shell patterns in paint. Something like this So this will be somewhat of a tutorial or trial and error(depending on how it goes) for a lace paint job. Rather than starting with a truck pannel, I am using a sqare of sheet metal to play with. The plan so far is to do a white base, with blue and red lace cover, and then clear coat over all of it. I chose these colors simply because I already have them sitting around. The lace I picked up today was just the generic stuff from Hobby Lobby. I was hoping for some kind of a spider web or skull pattern being that halloween is so close, but no dice. Updates of my progress will be coming shortly. If any of you paint guys have experiance with custom work, please chime in! Aside from some quick google searches, I am going in blind.
so whats this a question or just a statement? i seen them do lace on tv, came out really nice.
You typed faster than I could edit! The after adding the picture I was not able to type any more, so I had to go back and edit the rest of the post. This is going to be my experience of lace painting and an open question for anyone who has tips for lace painting.
from what i understand you just base coat then lay lace then put the color you want to highlight the pattern over that let tack up then lift lace straight off.

yea it pretty basic if your doing just lace but don't put it on to heavy... if your doing a white base use your blue or red on the lace it gonna look weird if it to many layers. also back off on the distance, i paint bout 8in from the surface and when you put your lace double the distance so your lace doesn't lift off the surface.
if your doing patterns like a lot of low riders do you might want to look into a mini spray gun or airbrush i use both, spray you base then lay out your pattern with tape or using a spray out card and cut your shape like the shell pattern you wanted and work you way from one side to the other. Also you want to spray on the edge of the tape or card to get a consist line and turn your air pressure down. it is time consuming to spray patterns so don't expect to be finish in one day.
