advise on paint prep.
Originally it was White. The owner painted it red. Door jams are red. Unfortunately it looks like a quik E job from Maaco. Under the emblems, under the hood, behind wheel moldings...all visibly white.
If I prep the dents and prime the truck- can I repaint over the now 2+ layer of red paint or do I have to sand off the paint and start over from bare metal?
This is definately work for a professional- but I want to sink my nails into this one and do it myself. I have used fiberglass and bondo successfully on my old Bronco, but I never got to the "finish" painting stage. I will have to get a compresser, but I do have access to the paint sprayer. I want to do it right, but also don't want to do un-necissary work.
Powerwash the truck first, then scuff all the paint with sandpaper. Then shopvac the paint dust off the vehicle, then wipe the truck with rags you've applied a little acetone to, to get every last little bit of dirt and dust. Acetone will evaporate very quickly and your rags will look awful very quicky!
Then paint right over what youv'e scuffed. If the paint is flaking or torn, then obviously just scuffing it isn't the answer, and you have to do some stripping. Generally I use a sandblaster with a fine media for this type of work so if I accidentally hit rubber gaskets or lines and hoses I have time to move the nozzle away from such items without burning holes in them.
I'm no pro however my work came out okay.
