Stalls in gear

I have a '74 with a 302 and a 2 barrel Motorcraft (recently installed re-manufactured), the truck started right up (I have made several short drives on my street) and I drove to a gas station. I turned it off and now it will start but its not idling right, it's "chugging", and need almost full throttle to keep it running. When I put it in gear (AT) it drives a few feet and stalls? I have the thermostaic choke, but the choke tubes are not installed (on order). Carburetor issue?

The rpms of the motor should be about 650 rpm with the auto trans in gear @ idle ..
Make sure the choke is opening as it warms up .. Take a pic of the carb with the air cleaner off

Pulled the plugs completely carbon fouled. Dropped in new plugs and made it home.

My choke is stuck on, how do I manually disengage it until I get the choke tubes installed?

loosen the black cap on the side of the carb (for adjusting your choke) and while holding the throttle open enough to disengage the linkage turn it so the choke is completely open then tighten the cap. Once you have everything hooked up for your choke there are multiple threads on adjusting automatic chokes.
Before you do this and just to be sure - do you have the wires for the automatic choke connected to a keyed power source and ground?

It's not electric, just need the choke tubes.

Got it! You should still be able to turn the cap until the choke is always open. Let us know if that fixes the current problem.

If you loosen the screws on the black plastic cap it can then be rotated counterclockwise .. Actuate the accelerator on the drivers side of the carb then the black plastic cap will be able to be rotated to the point where the choke opens fully .. Tighten the screws .. Leave it there until you get your other parts .. If it is hard to cold start before then just pull the air cleaner and have someone cover the throat with a rag while you try and start it pulling the rag away as it starts .. Let it warm up and replace the air cleaner .. It's better to have it wide open until you get your parts .. You'll get the hang of starting it this way after a few tries .. Just make sure the rag is big enough it doesn't get sucked in
