I did the head studs, egr delete, and head gaskets two years ago. I have a blown head gasket again. Knew it would happen, just didn't know when. Long story. Anyways I got a better job and am saving up to do it again. I want to get bigger injectors and a bigger turbo, I just don't know how big or what to get. I'm thinking 190s and a mtw stage two turbo with a regulated return. Already have an air dog 2 165. Will this be okay if I wanted to tow up to the max of the GCRW of the truck a few times a year with the correct tune? I don't tow much anymore, but I don't want to go to big where I cant tow what I want when I need to. Thoughts?
Why did you know it would happen again? Stock, this truck is topped out on HP, and even then still blows HGs. Studs are just trying to contain all the awesomeness that is already there. I hope your fancy new job is in the sunshine club with all those upgrades you'll still be eating head gaskets. Most people just consider studs something to keep stock bullet proofed.
With all that said, to get the most out of your oversized injectors and turbo, you will need a tune to get what you're paying for.
Non of these should hurt you're pulling capabilities either, just better have some gauges and pay attention
Reason being, when you put new head gaskets on and know that the heads aren't true, that the gaskets and studs were only a bandaid. Not the proudest moment in my life, but I ran out of time and needed to get the truck on the road. So it went back together. These things happen. So I plan on doing everything right this time and do it the way I want it. Truck has sg2 and pillar gauges. I monitor everything I can. Never have pulled with a bigger injectors so I don't know what's big enough and what's to big. I plan on truing the heads or buying new ones, making sure the block is true and do everything right this time around
Two years ago there were a lot of people using the Black Onyx gaskets. If you did, that would have been a problem for sure. Get your heads checked and use an OEM style gasket and you shouldn't have problems.
I have 155's with 30% nozzles, I also have a Power Max, lager I/C and custom tunes from Gearhead. I monitor everything, run a very severe maintenance schedule, keep a real close eye on all my temps especially my EGT's. My 5th wheel comes in right around 12k-12.5k depending on how long we will be out, my truck tows like a bear, but I wont win any races getting up to speed as I like to keep those EGT's in check.
So with all that being said, I still have my stock HG's, stock head bolts, EGR and oil coolers still intact. So to say that mods kill a truck isn't really true. My truck has been this way for about 20k and prior to that it was tuned and modded with the stuff in my sig minus the injectors and turbo.
I think my success with this combo has been built on being sensible while towing, Gearhead worked with me to pull as much power out of my combo while keeping most things in check, I only run an 8k tow tune, which is a little hot, but the throttle response is better.
This year on my list is a FASS fuel system, maybe a RR, and FICM tuning.
Sarge, that was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for your response. I have only used ford head gaskets. Got them straight from the dealer. It was my own fault that I'm doing this again, but I do all the work so its really just a money issue lol. I don't mind wrenching. Its what I do for a living
I have it in a box....its not installed yet. I couldn't decide between the FASS or the ADII, I guess there are horror stories about both....maybe I will just sell the FASS and get a RR and be done with it...knock on wood my stock pump has been fine thus far.
