Hi, Just wondering what you guys thoughts are on how often to switch out plugs and wires?
Anyone tried those E3 spark plugs- I hear good things on the weekend TV shows??
Also has anyone tried a higher performance ignition coil or ignition module?? If so what was the results?
I did some upgrades to my 74 F100 ignition last yr and was very pleased- elctronic conversion kit with a high output coil--it made a big difference. Just wondering if I should try something on my 86 F150 300 to wake it up a bit, the ignition system is original now with the exception of plugs and wires which have about 55k on them. Thanks
buy a nice msd or accel coil, high-quality cap and rotor (not autozone or napa, but a good one!), ford racing or taylor plug wires, and the cheapest copper plugs you can find. expensive plugs on these older trucks is a waste of money. cheap autolites work really good. set your timing to spec after your done, or try advancing it 3-4 degrees, most of the ford engines like a few more degrees initial advance. just about everyone here will tell you the same thing, based on lots of cumulative experience. good luck!
I recommend if you use a hotter coil, to use a different ignition module. People do it all the time, and it might be ok, but a hotter coil will draw more power through the module, and they get hot enough with the stock coil.
Going from points to electronic is a big difference, big improvement. Going from stock electronic to another brand of electronic, not so much of a difference.
