The owners manual for the F-150 shows the EB engine oil capacity
as being 6 qts.
A question to those of you who have done your own change: did it take
6 qts. to get to the top of the dipstick?
I just had my first oil change in 2 years at somewhere other then the dealer. I took them
a MC 500-S filter and 6 qts. of Mobil 1. They only used 5 plus a little more.
And the oil is to the top of the dipstick. Have checked it several times?
And at the risk of hijacking my own thread, I'm curious as to why the 5.0 has
an oil capacity of nearly 8 qts. V-8s I've had for the past 50 years have
needed about 5 qts. Why so much oil? Does it have to do with cooling?

The new 5.0 is not the same engine as the old OHV single cam push rod V8.

Yes, I put as much as I can get in the oil filter and then put the remainder of the 6 qts. in the oil fill tube.
Filling my 5.0 litre with Ford's recommended amount (7.3 litres if memory serves) of oil brings the level to the top of the safe zone hash marks on the dip stick. That is when changing the oil and the filter and when checked while sitting on level ground.
I measure and pour the required amount of oil into a plastic fuel can when I take the truck in for a service. I use a Ford filter. A friend owns the shop, so I'm allowed in to watch what is being done and I can see that all the oil goes in.
I have my oil changed at the dealer. They put 6 quarts in with a filter change. If I remember correctly my 2008 F150 5.4 took 7 quarts & my 2001 took 6 quarts. I was surprised the EcoBoost didn't need more oil.

Damn! I just bought a '14 with the 5.0 and wasn't aware it took 8 quarts! I guess it's still better than the 13 quarts my last truck took!

Good morning,
I'm a little confused as well... but you guys already knew that!
I know the oil capacity is 6 qts. So when I change my own oil & oil filter on my 2013 F150 Eco Screw I only use about 5 qts of oil to refill. I know I'm older now, but I think I can check my own dipstick...
I don't know why you guys think this is such a mystery. You can't put 6 quarts in if you don't get 6 quarts out.
- not changing oil filter
- tilt of your driveway or ramps so oil can't fully drain from pan
- not letting pan drain for long enough
- taking oil measurement on a tilt
Figure out which one you're doing wrong and you'll get 6 quarts in. And whatever you do, do not over fill. If it takes only 5 quarts then that's just the way it is unless you feel like doing another oil change.
