Good Morning everyone,
I picked up a 93 f150 earlier this week and everything is pretty much how the seller described it. The guy I bought it from said the guy he bought it from pulled the a/c out and I can see that. For some reason I assumed the defrost would still work, which it doesn't. Do I just need the blower to get the defrost working?
Here's some pictures.
If the fan is still present and working I think you just need to seal up that big hole in the firewall where the AC evaporator was, as it stands I think the fan is just blowing back into the engine compartment.
Sorry, yes the blower is there but the a/c parts aren't. When I turn the ****, I don't hear the blower turning on so I will have to work on it more when I get home. I didn't know if the heat was tied in to the evap system or anything else I'm missing. I'm not familiar with hvac so I don't know what I do and don't have.
I may be mistaken, but that heater hose loop resting on the upper intake plenum looks to be a heater core bypass. So it looks like you'll need to re plumb coolant to the core for starters.

Which probably means the heater core is toast. Not a certain thing, but be prepared for it.
Heater cores are easy on them, drop the glove box and remove the cover and it slides right out. Yes, get a piece of sheet metal and cover that hole in the fire wall, everything should operate once you figure what the PO disconnected, the blower resistor should go into the evap case which you dont have, so you may have to figure something out for that, gotta have blower speeds. If he didnt just cut wires, and left the plugs on everything you should be ok, or you can go picking at the bone yard and get your A/C working again if you like.
Shouldn't be too bad even if I do. New cores look to be around $25 at my local Orilley's. I'll have fingers crossed when I get home that he didn't cut any wires.
David7.3, to clarify, are saying I won't be able to change the blower speeds without the evap?
Just so you know, without a/c the defrost won't work real good at all. When you turn the selector **** to defrost, the a/c compressor is engaged so as to dry and dehumidify the air that's now being blown at the windshield.
Most people I know select full heat at the temperature **** when they use defrost... this is completely unnecessary and defrost works just as well on full cold! It ain't the temperature of the air that matters, it's the dehumidified air coming off the evaporator (a/c core) that gets rid of condensation.
Just wanted to mention this so you're not broken hearted after you fix the fan and your defrost still sucks because the a/c is out. I've been there!
Thanks for the heads up Dixie460. Do the AC evap go bad? One off a junkyard truck work alright or is it better to get a new one? What about the trucks that only had heat; did they have a separate system for the defrost?
No, trucks that have heat only, defrost by using heat, yes the evap does help dry the air, specially on a rainy day but the heat works fine, my A/C has a leak and I really didnt need it this year, I have no problem clearing the windshield with heat only. You have to find a place to put your blower resistor into, that is what controls the blower speed, looks like filaments in a light bulb, so they get hot that why they put them in the evap case, if you can find a spot in your heater box before the heater core that should be fine to keep it cool so they dont burn out.

If you do decide to reinstall A/C you will also need to install a new, as in brand spanking new, evaporator/dryer. Or at least that's what I've been coached while researching putting my A/C system back in order.

Those are 2 different parts. You should use new of each but if the evap core doesn't leak there is no reason to replace it. The receiver drier or accumulator should be new
