88'Ranger,the heater works when it wants to. Well I have found if you open and shut the doors a enough of times it works again. I have taken it to a repair shop and they said you could be a number of things, electrical connects are bad, heater core,or maybe the heater fan. He said it would be at the least $90.00 to check it, if I'm lucky they will be able to find the problem electrical is expensive to diagnos. At the end of our conversation he said if the brushes on the heater fan are worn to much then sometimes the opening of the doors would reposition them. But he is still unsure if this could be the problem. I think that is whats wrong since the opening of door helps. He also said to go home and check the heater fan ,but he does not know where it is in my year. Maybe in the dash or under the hood near the firewall or maybe somewhere else, good luck and let me know how it goes he said. If anyone has an idea of where the heater fan is or what is wrong please speak up!!!!! I live on the coast and without a window defroster you just can' drive, I know you can roll the windows down but it rains 60 % of the time here and it cold!!
I'm not clear if you have a problem with the blower not working, no air flow or you don't have any hot air, you can normally feel some hot air even if the blower isn't working.
If you are talking about the blower not blowingall the time then do this. Next time the blower does not work put it on high. If the blower still will not blow them at least you have eliminated the resistor which selects the speeds. When the blower is on high it by passes the resisitor. If this does not work then leave it on high and open the hood, on the right hand side of the vehicle(sitting in it) there will be your blower motor. The blower motor is mounted to the heater box, just follow the heater lines to the fire wall. When it will not work take a hammer and use the handle to tap the blower motor if it starts running then there is about a 97% chance it is bad. The other 3 percent is that maybe you rattled a bad connection. My 86 Ranger has (if I remember right) a two wire blower motor and it has quit before. Same thing pretty mutch. I would turn it on it would not work and after a couple of bumps it would work. The blower motor is easy to change. If you have AC it is a little harder but not much. If you want to know how to test the electrical just reply.
We did it,it was the blower fan! When it stopped working we hit it and it went on again. So we just replaced at the same cost of starter. The Napa auto parts guys said it seems all electrical parts are $75.00. I hope that will be it for awhile at least.
Thanks again for your help.
You are all great ! I am glad to be apart of a great group of Ford lovers,
