This piece was disconnected when we got the truck, upper hose completely missing, lower hose was cut off from whatever it was supposed to be connected to. it was just there, not connected to anything aside from the mounting bracket on the passenger inner fender...
FWIW - the truck starts & runs fine.
what is this thing, and what is it supposed to do?
(and credit/thanks to the person that posted this pic in another thread!)
The air injection system is there to pump air into the catalytic converter during cold starts. The extra air forces the converter to come up to temperature quicker. If you keep your engine tuned up the system is not required IMHO. The FEDs think otherwise.
Many on this forum have removed or purchased vehicles with the air injection system removed, the operation of the truck is not affected if done properly.

And what would "removing properly" be/entail?
From what we can tell, this truck has not had the best care in its life - air filter was so filthy it was a wonder it could run at all...
The F150/Bronco used air injection ports in the back of the heads. Those can be plugged with short threaded bolts ( I do no recall the size). The F250/350 used a more elaborate setup with air injection tubing into each exhaust manifold port. Those can be removed or crimp off the manifold log on each side and weld it shut.
You can remove the vacuum lines to the TAB/TAD solenoids but you have to leave them electrically connected to keep the computer happy. The air injection port on the factory converter also needs to be welded shut.
and I thank you both, gentlemen! (and all others that have responded)
I will do a bit of poking around (when the weather is a bit more cooperative) to see just what was done to close off the ports on the ol girl. And yes, this ol truck seems to have suffered not only neglect, but abuse as well.
We didnt expect perfection by any means for the price paid, but a bit dismayed at just how badly it was treated.
the next major projects, after verifying this air injection thing, will be trying to bring the brake pedal up, and getting the 4WD shifter operating a bit more smoothly.
I have been reading/searching and have found good threads about both of those items.
