4.9 straight six

My 94 f150 has the bulletproof 4.9 straight six, and I'm just curious if there are any good DYI power upgrades, like a DYI cold air intake..

Don't mess with the air intake. The factory one is a true cold air intake. As for power, that's a tractor engine in a truck. It isn't gonna go fast. Do the basic maintenance and drive the thing knowing it's gonna be reliable.

There are no bolt ons that are worth doing. Gears and bumping the timing a little help. Beyond that, you're looking at big money and custom efi to make power.

High flow cat and cat back exhaust are about the only bolt-ons that would make a noticeable difference.

I still haven't put a high flow cat on mine. I need to do that.

Ah okay, but yeah, besides exhaust, I had a feeling there weren't much stuff you can do to these engines. It seems like they're as good as they can be from the factory

Have an exhaust on mine. Sounds way better than my f250. I haven't noticed any power differences compared to other 300 6's though.

it's pretty simple when it comes to 300's.

1) drop in a K&N, adjust timing and keep the engine maintained.

2) put the highest flowing exhaust you can on it.

3) Drive it like you stole it.

I autocrossed my straight six 95 for a bit. it was a blast. the torquey engine pulled me through the corners. The engine ran beautifully the moment i pulled it out, it just had to make way for something a lot bigger.

daily driver, i'll always take a six.

The PO hacked the exhaust off right after the cab directly behind the muffler. Sounds awesome. But I would like to get a complete system when I had the dough. There is a small exhaust leak to at the gasket it sounds like
