Has anybody put together a cold air intake? I would like to make my own for my truck so I don't have to spend 200$ on one. I was thinking of using alot of intake stuff that's already there and manly replacing the stock air box with a high flow filter. My truck is a 5.4 V8.
The stock intake is already a high flow cold air intake. Yes it can be improved, just do the intake mods. You can search for it.
Most custom intakes have no shielding against the hot air coming from the engine. That air makes the incoming charge less dense, and it can detonation, so the engine retards the timing. Both of those rob potential power.
If you really want a cold air intake, the commercial ones are worth it. However, avoid oiled filter elements, go with the new washable dry elements.
