Simple question, which locking fuel cap do I need to buy? Stant Locking Diesel Fuel Cap
Part #: 10591D or Stant Pre-Vent Locking Diesel Fuel Cap
Part #: 10501D.
I have a 2006 F250 6.0 and the few online parts companies that have list both for my truck. Not sure if it matters on a diesel like it does on a gasser. If it didn't why make both? I've never seen a loose fuel cap light on my interment panel in the truck like the one in the Explorer. Also never seen an evap canister on my diesel. What's your thoughts?
I don't know the answer, but can't help but wonder why you would want one. Do people actually siphon diesel from your truck? (dumb question, people will steal anything). Are you concerned someone would do something nasty like contaminate your fuel (another dumb question, people will do anything).
Come to think of it I might want locking fuel cap too. It can't hurt and adds minimal extra step. I hope someone can give us an answer.
I purchased the Stant 10501D for my 2006 F250SD 6.0 a few weeks ago. Works fine with no issues so far. The only complaint I would make is it does not have a cap retainer or any way of making use of the OEM one.
I put a Stant cap on my 08' gasser, and my loose fuel cap light started coming on. I finally just gave up and put the OEM cap back on. I've considered trying to put a toolbox type lock on my fuel door. It wouldn't look bad and would serve the same purpose, Dennis.

I have one on my '11 6.2L. And yes,,, I miss the tether.
No help on the locking cap, but just wanted to coment on the tether. Removing The tether was the first mod I always made to my trucks since they started using them. Used to watch people unscrew the cap and let her fly, just dangle and scratch up the paint. For years I would set it on the bed rail while filling, untill for some reason I forgot to put it back on while out plowing last winter.thought I would never find it. With my new 14` I have left the tether and hang it over the pump handle so it stays off the paint.

On the fuel door, toward the hinge and on the top half, is a "hook". I always put the tether over the hook and the cap then rests only on the fuel door, not the truck side. I agree with not scratching the side if it can be helped.
They are not as simple as they look. Mine has a life of its own. Two locking replacement caps.
Got first locking cap to celebrate guy up the street getting out of jail.
I just went into auto part store and asked for a locking cap. They gave me 2 of them that I tried on in the parking lot.
After going down (not up) mountain passes it would throw a code. No big deal but have to stop and clear code or stare at the check engine light.
Second locking cap ordered from Ford. They had to order it in, don't remember price or model info. After a hard freeze it throws a code. Talked to many about the problem. Answers are ...because they are junk, what do you expect from plastic. Best answer so far in my opinion is cap is not getting tight fit because top of tube, where you stick the nozzle in at is either out of round or I have venting problem, maybe to much or not enough?
Whatever you get save old cap in plastic bag and your code reader to delete codes or stare at the check engine light.
The whole time waiting for neighbor to get locked up again so I can travel around in piece.
I put a locking cap on my '06 gasser when the OEM cap broke, leaving the threaded part in the filler tube (came out with a pair of needle nose pliers). That worked just fine for several years until I sold the truck. The current diesel got the green Stant 'D' locking cap when I started reading about folks that failed $18K fuel systems, often DEF put in the wrong hole by others, or -gasp- the owner. After several thousand miles nary a problem. I ordered them along with other parts for both from Rock Auto for about $8.00 or so each.
That tether - don't like 'em. On the '06 gasser the cap scuffed the black paint under the fuel door - there was no hook to hang the cap.
