Rear Brakes Help

does anybody have a decently easy method of getting the backing plate springs attached to the hooks when reassembling the drum brakes?

That thing is a biznatch!

This is on a one ton.

There is a tool to do it, but ive always used an old straight screwdriver that i ground a notch in the tip.
with or without the tool you need to have the shoe in just the right spot and the spring facing just the right direction. I put the tip of my modified screwdri er on the tip of the holx down spring to compress it. Reach around the back of the backing plate with the other hand to manipulate the hook.

Tip: set the parking brake to get the lever out of your way. Dont forget to release it before trying to get the drum on.

x2 ... as soon as you notch an old screwdriver, your life suddenly becomes a lot better.

Whatever shape. Get about a 1/2" wide screwdriver and grind a notch in the tip about
1/8" wide. Push straight in on the spring tip. Without tbe notch the screwdriver tends to slide off.

Before I got the tool for this I would line up the pin and the top then while holding the pin in place with one hand I would use a set one lineman pliers to compress the spring and lock the catch in place

I usually use a combination of a pair of vise grip pliers clamped at the base of the spring perpendicular to spring and a screw driver in the hook of the spring. Usually not to bad but I have never done a 1 ton before....
