Burned Caliper

I pulled into my driveway after a 30 minute drive and smelled burning brakes. The right front was the culprit so I took a garden hose and cooled it down. The next day I remove the caliper and one of the pistons fell apart. So I need a new caliper and trying to decide if I buy after market or go with Motorcraft? I think the rotor, caliper, and pads are original since I the rotor is stamped Ford and the caliper bracket has TRW and Ford markings. Any help will be appreciated.

I just had two calipers fail on my '05 and I went with unloaded reman OE units from my local Advance Auto. The four I purchased were about $70 a piece plus a $35 core. My original calipers made it 122k miles, I figured these remans be fine for another 100k. I have no experience nor interest in aftermarket calipers.

I would go with OE for that. Also since you sprayed the rotor down it is likely warped. I would replace the rotor as well.

I thought you can only get OE from the dealer and not local auto parts store?

No, Motorcraft is sold a lot of places. Sometimes you have to ask for it. Even online stores line rockauto.com will have Motorcraft parts.

I would opt for OE with the Rotor as well.

My ford dealer had Motorcraft OE remans but they were the caliper only - the "bracket" that holds the calipers and has the pins was not included. My local Napa had ford OE remans, from another rebuilder but remanned ford units, and they came complete with remanned brackets. Also more expensive. I bought the ones from the Ford dealer and reused my brackets, but if I had known all this before I bought them I probably would have gotten the ones from NAPA that were complete. I got aftermarket rotors from the ford dealer. My local ford dealer goes out of his way to source and supply high quality aftermarket as well as OEM parts, for stuff like this. Gives you the option - "would you like these rotors that I use on my personal truck for $80 each, or would you like the blue box ones for $160 each? BTW we get longer service life from the aftermarket..."

I went with reman calipers as well I just had one of my tears seize up and then the pins wouldn't move in the front. The unloaded with brackets and new pins were $73 each for the fronts and I think I paid $68 for the rear. When I was in your shoes there was no way I was reusing the old pins and rusty brackets for a $10 difference in price. Also I replaced the rubber flex lines. They were under $30 from the parts store and now everything is new except the hard steel lines which I did inspect. My rear that hung up was actually rolling smoke off of it when I got to work one day. Cooled it down with an air hose but it burnt the paint off pads, backing plate it was HOT!

My local Ford dealer does not have rotors or calipers in stock but has pads. NAPA has premium rotors for $96.69 and Untra Premium rotors for $139.00. Not sure if it is worth the extra $80.00 for a set of Ultra's. Advanced Auto has Wagner rotors for $95.99 and OE reman calipers for $68.99.

I am going to buy the Ford pads and go with Advanced reman caliper. Now I have to figure out what rotors to buy!!!

Update. Advance does not have the Wagner rotors in stock. They have Everlast. Advance does have th caliper for $68.99.

I found another Ford deal who has rotors for $116.63 ea and pads for $83.30 and has both in stock. I forgot to ask about the caliper but I'm sure it will be a lot more tham Advance Auto. Maybe I will just go with the dealer. Thoughts???

I usually go with the dealer, since I find that Napa is usually about the same money. It depends though, I shop both and try to split it up.
