I have 66 F250 352 V8 3speed with what I believe is 4:10 gears in the rear.
Runs at high rpm all the time. Max speed is around 80. Is there other gearing I can put in rear?
Is that a Dana 60 rear end? With 4.10 gearing and F250 that would be my guess. If so, you are on the right side of the "carrier break" to go to a higher gear without major hassles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_60
Highest gear is 3.31:1
Others in between are 3.73 and 3.54, at least.
Going the opposite direction, if you go to 4.56 or lower gearing then the carrier needs to be swapped out.

Only rear axle installed in 1955/72 F250's: Dana 60. Some 1973/86 F250's have a Dana 60, some have a Dana 61-1. 1983/89 F250 "Light Duty's" have the Ford 8.8" rear axle.
AXLE code stamped on the 2nd line...far right of the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.
Dana rear axle ID tag located under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover to the housing. By now, many of these tags are missing.
Swapping a different rear axle ratio into a 1966 F250 that currently has a 4.10 ratio: You may also have to change the companion flange.
Two different 4.10 R&P's were used in 1966, one uses a 10 spline companion flange, the other uses a 29 spline companion flange. 1967 and later 4.10's all have a 29 spline companion flange.
3.54 ratio introduced 1966, uses a 29 spline companion flange, 3.73 ratio introduced in 1967, uses a 29 spline companion flange.
3.07 & 3.23 ratios introduced in 1980, both have a 29 spline companion flange.
Pic: 4851 is the basic part number for the companion flange.
From Email, I have owned my truck since 1974 and have no plans to get rid of it. I still use it as a work truck. I have considered putting disc brakes on it and a 4 speed.
Tim adding a 4spd wont do anything for you, as you still will have a 1 to 1 output ratio. What you have is a locomotive that will pull 50 boxcars and not designed to run much over 45mph. You don't have inexpensive rear ratio options for the F250 Dana 60 rear.
The reason that I asked about the brake upgrade, was to suggest that you buy a 73-76 F100 donor and upgrade the front & rear with it's parts giving you many more options with the Ford 9 inch rear.
My truck will easily hit 80 mph in 2nd gear with the 3.25 rear, and it still pulls good too. Not like yours, but not to shabby either.

I thought the break was 4:10 and numerically higher or 3:73 and numerically lower? When I get around to the axles on mine I am going to 3:73 from 4:56, which is going to cost me an *** load of cash to do...Dana 60 rear, 44 front...yee-ha..
I went from a 3.92 to 3.23 gearing in the Dana 44 installed on my 62. Had to change most everything in there to do it (but it was completely shot anyhow).
After a long drive on the freeway yesterday, I have to say, it's one of the best mods I've done on any vehicle I've owned. Still not a speed demon, but I can cruise at 55-60 comfortably while still pulling fine.
One thing to figure in the price is new speedo gearing. Mine is running 10-15 mph low.

Are you going to stick with closed knuckle or go to open knuckle on the 44? So many choices...
Some sites that say similar to this, but you may be right.
[QUOTE=TA455HO;14743377]Are you going to stick with closed knuckle or go to open knuckle on the 44? So many choices... I'll send you a PM because ya know... ...lol. But yes, the mind boggles...open or closed front axle, swap for later model front and rear, open front means maybe disc brakes, different steering linkage, on to the power steering mod since Ill already have open knuckle and newer steering components? Lions and Tigers and Bears Toto...
Speedometer DRIVEN gear is on the end of the cable in the trans, take it out and count the number of teeth and post it.
Two possible types of these gears, iron or nylon. Nylon is available from Ford, iron is obsolete.
In order to slow the speedo down 10-15 MPH, you will need a DRIVEN gear with 2 more teeth than your present gear has now.
So, to speed it up 10-15 mph, I need 2 less teeth, right?
Pulled mine out today and it's the (obsolete, of course) iron. I count 19 teeth. Looking now for one with 17 . . . Can I use a nylon one in place of this?
