The simple answer is a lower gear (higher numerically, ie. 4.56) will get you lots of power to the wheels, but your top speed decreases. A higher gear (lower numerically, ie. 3.31) will get you higher top end speed, but a bit less power at take off. So, it depends what you're planning to do with your truck. Most guys that haul heavy loads will opt for lower gears like a 4.10. Dana 60's are very popular and parts are available. You may want a higher gear if you just use your truck for just transportation/commuting. A higher gear may save you just a bit of gas, but that still depends on how heavy you are on the pedal. There is usually a tag on the differential cover that shows the gear ratio. Most drag racers will opt for lower gears to get a better launch. They'll get faster ET's, but lower top speeds.
