I've never had a diesel before and just bought a 1983 6.9 idi I love this truck more than anything and want to know the best way to get power and mileage out of it without blowing myself up or destroying such a beautiful work of art that dang near has me convinced my dads twelve valve really isn't that great. Please help
There are a lot of great build threads on this forum each containing a great deal of information. Here is one of the longer ones to get you started. Project Smogie
First thing power wise: Maintance. A new IP and injectors will really help. Making sure your timing is right for your engine is also key.
Then, add a turbo. All the major kits are designed to not need studs, and it will add /significant/ power, especially in the upper end where it droops NA.
Your IDI won't touch your dad's 12 valve as far as power and fuel economy. Your truck will hold up better than his Dodge though. When he goes on vacation, swap engines between trucks. He may be slightly pissed when he returns though.

Well if its stock... already has him beat lol. But mileage will be tough to beat a 12v, it is after all a 5.9 However a 6k lb IDI should be able to get high teens if setup right and driven normally.
