I have a 1986 f150 4x4 with 4.9 litre. Recently running like crap, when I changed the oil noticed lots of gas in my oil ,what would cause this and how do I fix it? Please help !
I did put a new carb on a couple weeks ago because the choke was sticking and running rough and it didn't run any better , but a few days ago I couldn't get it to stay running and noticed the crankcase was very full when I checked the oil. Is there a way to check the fuel pump before changing it?
For about $25 MOL you can get a new fuel pump at NAPA. I don't know of any way to check the old one short of taking it off and apart, if possible, to check it especially if it's leaking to the inside.
I had this happen on an engine and didn't figure out what was happening until it did some damage and cost me a new engine.

I concur. Fuel pump is cheap, especially compared to the cost of repairing the damage done from fuel-thinned oil......
I replaced the fuel pump on the 74. Drained out over 2 gallons of "oil", that was thinner than water..... At least it likely cleaned any crud inside the engine. That was after only having it running for a few minutes.

Sorry it took so long to reply but anyway I changed the oil ,fuel pump and the truck ran . I tryed to make the truck run to much before with the gas in the crank case that I screwed the motor!! She runs now but burns oil bad so looking for another motor . Learnt the hard and expensive way I guess, but thanks for all your help and input . Just be a matter of time before she will be alive again!!
10W30 is correct for a "healthy" engine, but since yours is now using oil, go to Walmart and buy Rotella 15W40. It is thicker and might just buy you some time before having to rebuild/replace the engine.
You should always run diesel rated oil in a flat tappet cam engine like the 300, gas oils do not have zinc anymore and your cam will wear out without it. You can also use an additive like ZDDPlus with gas rated oil, but that's more expensive. Supertech 15w40 works well.
