I am looking to replace my 10 year old Interstate battery in my 74 f350 and I was wondering what size and cold cranking amps I need. THe one that is in there is 1000 cca which I think has to be way more than I would need. Truck has no AC but does have a winch on the bed so any recommendation would be appreciated.
Also the battery cables are old and I think I am going to replace them. Can I just buy any old battery cables or do I need ones of a specific gauge and length for the truck.
Speedway (and others) sell bulk cable and the clamps to roll yer own, heavy gauge stuff. This is a good way to go because some of the replacement cables available today are cheap knockoffs that only look like heavy conductors, they have thick insulation but thin copper.
Go with at least 4ga wiring, or bigger. Also, consider Marine Battery Clamps and Eyelets on the cables: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post10264354 This way you can swap the battery clamps when they get boogered up.
I also went one more step and soldered the crimp connectors
Guessing you didn't use a ratshack pencil iron.. Maybe a propane torch?
Yup, propane torched it.
Try and do the soldering quick and have a water soaked rag around to keep solder from flowing up the wire as much as possible. Want to keep the solder at the ends, and not in the wire
