Blend door actuator

Hi all,

I have a 2009 Ford Ranger.

I was having a problem with the blend door earlier this year and I discovered that the actuator motor burned out.

I replaced it with a Standard Motor J04011, but I noticed that my air conditioning is not working. I've looked into it and discovered the compressor is still turning. Hmm. I then took off the actuator and checked it. It isn't able to close the door all the way to full cold. I would guess it's 1/4" to 1/2" open to warm. I checked the actual door itself and it closes all the way (I can turn it past where the actuator stops.)

Is it possible for these things to be bad from the manufacturer or should I just get the Motorcraft one and skip all of the aftermarket manufacturers?

Is the center section of the A/C compressor pulley turning? If not, then the compressor is not compressing.
I think the actuators need to be 'clocked' in that they have only a certain arc of operation, and the flap has to move within that arc. If installed with the actuator partially 'left' or 'right', but the flap is centered, the actuator cannot move far enough.
If the actuator is keyed such that it fits only one way, then it may be you have to go to OEM. If it can fit onto the shaft more than one way, the previous stuff applies.

Regarding the compressor, do you get cold air when MAX AC is selected? In such case, hot coolant is shut off from the heater core, so even if the blend door isn't closing completely, there is no hot air to blend in with the cold.

Yes, I checked that the compressor was actually turning, and it is. It wasn't terribly warm per se, about 17 C and sunny. The compressor turns on for a few seconds, then off for 5-10 seconds, then on, etc.

When I turn the temp selector to full cold I can remove the actuator and turn it past where the motor stops with my fingers, until I can feel it close completely.

I remember I had problems installing it (when I was lining it up I discovered that the old broken actuator had more travel.)

I tried max A/C and it doesn't seem to make much difference (although I probably didn't run it long enough to cool the heater core, that would probably take quite a while if the door is not closing all the way.) Actually, I'm going to set it to max A/C and turn it to full hot to see what it does and report back.

So I tried max A/C and it doesn't seem to make any difference. The compressor only runs for 1-2 seconds then switches off. I am thinking something is wrong with the A/C.

I bought this truck new and I brought it to the dealership more than once because of a loud banging noise when I had the A/C on. They told me it's normal, there's nothing wrong with the air conditioning system. I had the hood open once when the compressor kicked on and that banging noise was from the compressor. So now five years later it craps out. I don't think it's a coincidence. I don't even drive the truck all that much, it's been five years now and I only have 62,000 km on it.

I'm pissed off enough now that I will not consider any Ford in my automotive purchasing future. First the axle seals went (under warranty), then the heater door thing craps out then the A/C blows up. I'm really not impressed with the build quality.

That's a symptom of a low refrigerant charge. You should try adding some R-134a before you condemn the whole A/C system.

Yeah, now that I've calmed down a little I don't feel so dang mad. I went to my local A/C shop and they said the same thing.

I don't know when I'm going to be able to recharge it though, I wonder if I should unplug the compressor for now?
