I am surprised that the Small block ZF 5's, 2X4, are so difficult to find. I see them listed by j/y's at sites like car parts dot com, but they're asking $600 for a tranny with nearly 20 years old, with untold miles on it.
I have a tricked out s.b. C6 with less than 30k miles for trade.
I've been keeping my eye on one I found on cl for over a month. Listed for $575. I'm like you that's pretty steep. The ones in a jy usually want a core too. I called a couple of places and they wanted around $100 for shipping
You'll find them in 1 ton duallies behind the 351w. I bought an 89 f350 dually for the frame and suspension and rear axle, got it with a 351w with a zf42. Paid $450 for it, beware, it has the slave cylinder and release bearing together inside the bell housing. The 89 dually comes with a sterling axle and has the metric bolt pattern and can make your money back in parts.
This is a bit of a highjack but I'm curious about how much weight these tko's can handle. I'm going to be looking at 18-21 ks behind a 460. I've been under the impression that I'm comitted to a zf47 with a direct/over brownie box and 19.5 tires for fuel economy. Bb's are a lot cheaper for me than a gearvenders od. Highjack over.

According to the literature, 500 ft.lbs. of torque. Opt for the 3.27 first gear versus the 2.87. It has a 31-spline output shaft and the commensurate yoke from a C6 which is where I got it and the coupling shaft for my long bed. It fit perfect cuz I didn't use an adapter plate due to the short-shaft. The TKO has a same pattern as a Toploader. Hence, it can bolt directly to an FE bell.
It's funny that you mention the 31 spline yoke. That's usually the difference between a good np435 and a light duty. I sold my old np435 to a 4 wheeler member and his biggest concern was that mine had the 31 spline yoke and not the 28. My biggest concern with an od trans is the weight of a truck and 5th wheel RV trailer on the overdrive gear. when the truck is 7000lb or less it's not that hard on the trans but when you have 18 - 21000 lbs it can kill the overdrive even driving on the plains. Mind you, a person can't sneeze at a trans that can take 500 lbs of tq.
Proof that it had 31 splines
