I was measuring the bolt patterns on my T18 and a ZF at a used parts shop to see that they would match. They seem to be ok but does anyone know how a big block bolt pattern differs from a small block pattern? measurements? I want to make sure I get the right transmission before I spend the bucks. The guy at the parts shop said there was only one ZF made in 1988 so it should fit. The tag on the ZF states it is an s5-42 for an F250. Any help is appreciated.
I did almost the reverse swap from yours a few years ago. I had a 1988 F 150 I6 2wd Long Bed with a M5OD tranny. What I did was swap out the 5 speed for a T-19 4spd.
As far as I know there were only 2 basic types of ZF transmissions. One has an integral bell housing with the internal (wrapped around the transmission input shaft) slave cylinder, and the other has a seperate bell housing with a lever operated throwout bearing.
The one with the integral bell housing is for the small block V8 & I6 (302, 351 W and 300) and the other is for the big block (460) and diesel.
For your swap I believe you will need the tranny (of course) and a new slave cylinder hydraulic line (from Ford), drill new holes in your crossmember (I think I just had to drill my crossmember but you might try to get the ZF crossmember) and since mine was a long bed I had to get the driveshaft (due to different tranny lengths).
