My stereo works - except for the faceplate display.
i checked fuse #38 and it's fine. took the stereo out, took it apart - put it back together, re-installed it - no clues there.
The one in my van does that from time to time too. I just poke the display a few times and it starts working again. One of my t-birds did the same thing too. If it does it intermittently like that then probably just a short somewhere.
Your tale about poking the display led me to think that it might have been weak, heat-soaked or cold solder joints - an 'open' rather than a short circuit.
I reflowed the solder joints on the display, the volume **** and the three big resistors.
sure enough - i fixed it.
Thanks to my dad for handing me his 4 diopter drug store reading glasses or i wouldn't have been able to see it. it's nice to have 'Macro-mode' available for small stuff like this.
