I finally had time over the weekend to get my new ball joints installed. I had been a bit aprehensive about doing it in the first place as it's been about 20 years since the last set I installed, but things couldn't have went any better. It took about 4 hours on the first side and less than 3 on the second side, the worst part for me was getting the old joints out but other than that evertything went well, almost scary how well it went
And the homemade seal driver worked like a champ as well. The truck almost drives like new again, and it might me just me but just from looking at it the tires do seem to sit straighter not leaning in like they use to. All in all it was a good job done....now it's time to get the fiver out and go camping
AAAHHHH HA!! You you got all the luck! I did mine yesterday and if it wasn't one thing, it was another. Took 8 hrs just to get the driver side done. Working on the other this weekend.

Congrats on a job well done, I needed passenger side upper and lower and wimped out plus didn't have the proper tools so had it done in shop, ouch. Glad to here..
I also need to get mine done, I have never done ball joints before so I am kind of apprehensive about doing them. 8 hours for one side, no thanks! If I do decide to change them out myself, I think it will be this summer.

Don't feel bad Mike, i did the same thing. I just don't have the time or tools to tackle a job like that. The bill was $475 & the good part is my aftermarket warranty covered $385 of it. They did the lower on the other side during inspection a few months ago. I've been debating if I want to to bite the bullet & just pay to have the last one done or just ride it out until it goes bad.

It isn't normal to take that long. The last time I did them on another truck I had both sides done in 4 hours. But my truck had 212K miles on the original ball joints, and I had to run for seals in the middle of it. If you have the right tools, it can go pretty quick.

This is the problem, I don't have any tools to press the ball joints in or out although I do have the axle seal tool.

You can "rent" tools including the manual press from Autozone. Works best with a air impact but what you do is leave them a deposit of the price of the tool, then when you are done, bring it back and you get your money back. (Like buying and returning after use.)

Me too and glad you had that warranty, passenger side up-lower and he installed new vac seals and greased the hubs,525.00. I figured he was in there might as well get it done. I would just wait IMHO for the last one, get as much out of it as possible.
I think luck had lots to do with everything going so well. I had set aside a whole day to do one side and was suprised it didn't even take a half day. I was going to buy a press just to have but when I got the ball joints at napa about $75 for the lowers and $45 for the uppers they wanted $380 for the press so I just rented the one they have for $15 seemed like a heck of a deal to me. I went to ford to get the seals about $170 total for both sides (that one hurt a litte) their ball joints were about the same price but didn't have any of the greasable ones in stock so I went with napa instead. I would do this job again in a heartbeat wasn't hard at all
