I have a 1992 f250, 460 with a A4OD in it. The trani was rebuilt about 50k (km) ago by the previous owner who dragged a slide in camper around. He stated he would install a trani cooler in it if I was to use it for a camper. (his one mistake he said) I now have an 11.5 foot camper that is definately a load when on. I asked at a dealership, and they looked at the rad area and indicated I had a factory cooler on it. (maybe as it was an advisor, not mechanic)
Are the factory units too light duty to do do the job. (my first thought)
What should I be looking for when having a new unit installed or added. The trani is working well now, and I want to keep it that way.
Thanks
I have a 95 F-250 PSD that had a factory tranny cooler on it. I am not sure what the GVW rating is on them but I was experiencing temps around 200 when my 11.5 Lance was on the truck. Just a few weeks ago I replaced the factory cooler with a B&M 28,000gvw cooler and what a difference. So far I have been running around 160 under load, just a little above normal temps. I would definately recommend changing the factory one out, its a cheap investment.
Thanks for the opinion. I will be looking into having one of these larger coolers installed. Dragging around a 11.5' camper on short range trips has seen the sweet smell of the trani fluid turn a touch off.
