how to buy a transfer case from the wrecker

i need so advice on buying a used transfer case from the wrecker......how do u know if its any good ....i bought this one in the truck right now for 450, lucky its still on warrnty but i dont want this problem again...so how do i know if its any good when i get the new one.......btw its a f-250 w/351w c6 borg warner 1356 manual shift...thanks in advance......any advice would be awesome

You can usually get them rebuilt for less than 500 bucks. I wouldnt pay more than 150 at a junk yard.

Pull it yourself from something that is rolled or hit from the side. A bad front or rear hit that bends the frame or moves the axles can push the driveshafts into the transfer case which causes damage if the UJs do not break.

A quick test is to put it into 4x4 and turn the rear output. The front output should turn at the same time. This is pretty easy to do, at least on the 208s. Then tip the thing every which way and listen for any banging or loose stuff that would indicate a broken chain.
