if your converter is not locking you will overheat the trans, when driving when you think its not locked, pull on the flashers, this will unlock the converter, you should feel it unlock, and imeditly lock when you turn off the flashers, the 2-3 shift is unlocked, then it locks, the 3-4 shift is with converter locked. check that your FILPS (tps) is correctly set, to 1.1 to 1.2 volts.

Well I been driving it like that since I put the van on the road half way through summer, and already put about 10k miles on it. I changed the filter, and flushed it with all new fluid when putting it on the road, oil still looks brand new red, doesn't smell burnt at all so i'm not worrying. If it does die, good riddance, it'll give me a good reason to have a ZF5 van!

The only time it does lock, is when it's fully warmed up. Shut the engine off for a few minutes, start it up, put it in Drive right away, hit the road, it'll shift through the gears once, it'll lock and stay locked, soon as you let off the gas, it'll unlock and won't ever relock, or sometimes it'll lock unlock, lock unlock, when it does that I just tap the brakes, or put the 4 ways on, then it unlocks and stays unlocked.

I can't find the thread how to check and set the volts on the TPS

I remember FORDF250 had a really good thread on it, back before I even owned an E4OD, but can't find it now.

hmm.check your brake switch john.might be all it is.of course the trans control unit needs to know your vehicle speed as well but it only reads the info directly from the speedometer in the 92-96/97hd as far as i know.im not well versed in where the speedo signals come from to tell the trans controller the speed in the older trucks.i always forget when i learn anyway lmao.the info is for sure 100% here though.
(something about cables directly from t-case if 4wd and tail housing for 2wd....but as far as where the teca grabs the speed and how....can't recall.it needs this vital info for proper shifting/lockup for sure.)

tps settings;

I know in the older cable driven speedo E4OD's, the speed sensor is the RABS in the rear axle, and mine works, as the light isn't on while driving.

Brake switch must work, brake lights come on when I brake.

And thanks a million for that link! That's the thread I been lookin for!
