My speedo reads way wrong and jumps about 50moh at a time. you can be laeving a parking lot doing about 5mph and the speedo is red lining at 120. the funny thing is that somtimes it will read perfectly normal. Have i tore up somthing?..yet Is this because my speedo just needs to be greased or what. If so how would i go about that. or is my cable broke or what?
If you will check your local Pull-A-Part (I know there is one in Norcross and one on the South side of ATL) you can get them for $5 or $10. I usually hit up the one in Norcross, but I have heard that the one on the southside of ATL usually has several 70's Fords.
Yeah, your cable is most likely the problem. Disconnect it from the tranny and see if you can pull it out and inspect it, if it looks ok try greasing it and putting it back in. Sometimes you can save them.
the weird thing is that it worked fine today so im scared to pull it out and mess with it. a guy at the NAPA uptown said that he thought it was probaly a bad gear. This should be simple enough to check. if the gear isnt bad i need a cable i reckon.
FYI cables are 30 bux new.
As said before, unhook it at the transmission and pull the driven gear out. Inspect the gear for wear. If it looks good pull the cable out of the liner and inspect it. It is usually the cable, not the gear that fails. Usually, but not always! A good auto parts store can get the cable.
I have to agree with it probably being the cable. Mine was acting the same way, until it finally quit working altogether. When I looked under the truck, there it was, twisted like a pretzel.
You can disconnect it at the head and transmission. Spray a ton of carb cleaner down the cable housing until it comes out clean then blow it out with compressed air. Ounce you get it dried out get some graphite cable lube and dump it in spinning the cable ounce in a while to get it to migrate through the entire cable housing. If possible pull the cable out of the housing. I think it will come out from the head end look for fraying and kinks if you don't find any put some graphite on it and slide it back in.
What all holds the cable in the truck..I do need to take it out the truck, dont i? Theres the end at the trans and the end at the speedo. Any thing special in between there?
