2000 Expedition EB - I changed transmission fluids this weekend; pan/filter and drained the torque converter. I added new fluid but notice I had a leak coming from the pan. I redid the pan but when I added fluid back throught the dipstick I notice fluid hitting the ground as if I had a hole in the dipstick. I could not get a reading on the dipstick and notice trans fluid leaking down on the catalytic converter. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks - I read the thread you linked to and it sounds like my problem. My vehicle does have a lot of rust and when I looked at the dipstick tube with a light I noticed a lot of rust patches.
I know it's a bit of a pain but if you remove the front right tire and the wheel well skirt, it's much easier to get a look at the tube through there. You might even be able to get a slitted piece of heater hose with RTV in it wrapped around the tube to stop the leaking.
I took the front wheel off and could see the rust and pin hole without removing the wheel well cover. There is so much rust on the dipstick tube that I'm better off replacing it. Thanks again alloro.
You can try penetration fluid and a small amount of heat but I recommend lots of wiggling and twisting. Maybe down low with vise grips. The new tube may need some RTV around the base.
Once the bolt is out the only thing left holding it is the rubber grommet where it penetrates into the tranny. If the filler tube doesn't wiggle at all then it's possible (dare I say it) that you perhaps removed the wrong bolt.
