Ok guys in need of help my 1978 ford f150 custom has 351m c6 auto trans and i am missing the fly wheel cover between the tranny and motor but i do have washers between the housing of the tranny and starter. My starter will start my truck a few times before it starts whining then i take it off and put it on again and itll do the same thing over and over and im tired of having to do this. My truck will run perfectly fine when it starts. Ive checked the teeth on the flywheel there all fine the starters teeth are fine as well ive gone threw five starters thinking tht was the problem but its clearly not, ive also check the flywheel to see if it was bowed out or not on properly i cant figure it out help me please!!
the flywheel will stop in the same 8 points when you shut it off. is it possible that the teeth are chewed up on one of those 8 points? i was going to say it is the starter drive but you said you went through 5 starters. what kind of starters have you used? new? old? old rebuilt? same aftermarket company? you have an auto so you can't flip the ring gear around. are you sure it is the right flywheel in it?
edit: take the washers off between the housing and the starter, your starter drive maybe isn't getting in there far enough to get a good sold hit on the ring gear and it kicks it back.

I have taken the washers off of it but then it wont connect at all and that process was done with every starter ive put in it its a new starter from napa and like i said it does the job perfect every time it just gets knocked loose somehow and its driving me insane tht i have to worry every time i get in it if itll crank right up. And i do not know if its the right flywheel i do know however that the guy who did the job for me (cause i was shipping out an they tried to surprise me with it fixed) didnt habe a clue what he was doing he didnt even know if the motor was a cleveland or a modified but thats when i stepped in (cause i found out what they were trying to do and i dnt trust anybody to work on my truck but me and a select few) with that being said i did inspect the flywheel and i felt it may have been to small but i was proven wrong when me and my ford guru buddie was doing the job from scratch again the problem with that is hes no longer with us and he was my go to guy but please if u have any suggestions im more then intrested cause i need this problem to go away
i personally would suspect the flywheel at this point than. first i would just order the right one for the motor and automatic transmission and pop that in. while you are in there get the plate that goes between your motor and transmission. it is on there for a reason and i don't think i have one laying around but i can check tomorrow. mine was for a 351m 400 to c6. it might be that you don't have enough shimmed out as well. also if you want to check you could take it out and heat up the ring gear with a torch if it falls off it is for a manual and if it is pinned on there it is for an automatic.
on a personal note when you said shipped out i take it you were in the military and thank you for your service, and sorry for the loss of your friend. and also welcome to fte
Ok ill have to do that sunday when im off work i do still have the reciepts from all the purchases for the motor including the flywheel ill go threw them as well and ill call the store and double check to make sure it isnt the right flywheel before i pull it apart cause it is my only means for transportation and im only off sunday and hopefully ill only need to just put the shim on it but i havent been able to find another one i had one originally but the guy who was trying to surprise me misplaced alot of parts and bolts ect. he had no idea what he was doing and threw it away my motor is a 351m-400 so if i need to purchase that shim from you ill be more then happy to if itll stop this problem
And thank u for the kind remarks of the service but im no longer with the army i never got to ship out due to personal reasoning but i dont deserve the credit even though i do intend on re-enlisting at a later time cause i havent earned that yet but thank u
Ok so i fabricated a shim for the starter not the whole trans and its stopped my problem i had and alternator bracket the long one which allows you to set it in different positions and i cut and welded it sanded it down and now my truck will start up everytime i cranked it turned it off over and over an over and it hasnt changed positioning so problem was the shim the flywheel id fine i pulled it today and matched it to the one at oriellys so i was good there thank you for all the help!
