400 flywheel chewed up

I finished putting the 400 in my 77' F150, and everything worked great, but when I went back checking the driveline, I noticed metal shavings in the bell housing behind the cover. I checked the flywheel, and it's being chewed up by the starter. I verified again that I had the correct flywheel, and checked the starter by part number to ensure that I had the correct one. Everything checks out, but one day of starting and running the truck has torn the flywheel up to the point that I am going to have to get a new one. Any ideas why???

You can buy just the ring gear & have a machine shop put it on. Is it tearing the starter up too ?

It didn't look like the starter gears were torn up, but I will have to check again. Any idea why it's doing it? I figured if the starter and the flywheel were matched up correctly, that there wouldn't be any problems. I don't want to get the new ring gear and have it torn up again.

Did you put the spacer in between the bell housing and engine?

Nope. Couldn't find one to fit the motor, but the flywheel and the starter should be in the same place relative to each other correct?

No , you have to have it. It is a spacer also. The starter drive is getting rammed into the ring gear.

I appreciate it. I will hunt one down tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem.
