I have a 1986 F150 with a 300 six. It came with the 3 speed stick.
I recently convertered it to a C6 and used the flywheel and tranny that I had from another truck. That truck was an 82, but the motor had been swapped at least once, so I dont know what year. All tranny parts were rebuilt.
The starter is a brand new one for a 1986 150 with an auto.
It sounds like the teeth are not meshing 100 %and there are metal shavings in the bellhousing. It will start the truck with ease, just makes nasty noises.
Is it possible that this flywheel has the wrong tooth count?
Does anybody know what the tooth counts were and what year they were put into?
I dont drive the truck very much, but I would still like to get it all fixed correctly.
You should use the starter for an 82 instead of the 86, even tho there isn't any way to shim that new starter out, why not see if the starter gear will mesh with the teeth of the flywheel?
If it was me....I would change out the starter gear on the starter that meshes with the flywheel, but of course, I think I would first try to match up the year model with the kind of bell housing that the starter would fit into, and if that didn't work, simply change out the engaging gear that would mesh with the flywheel would be the second choice.
