'91 f150 Ignition
Help! My '91 F150 with 175,000 miles is acting weird. Have lots of "slop" in the ignition switch and I am intermittantly losing power to my radio, wipers, elect. windows, and the anti-lock light comes on. Motor keeps running though. I can jiggle the ignition and everything works until the next bump. I replaced the actuator rod about a year ago (christ what a job!). Truck won't start with the tilt wheel up but works just fine if you pull it down a couple of clicks. Am I looking at replacing the key switch or do I have additional actuator problems?

It could be the switch (pretty easy to swap out) or the "actuator" which is 2 pieces of cast pot-metal that commonly break on pre-'92 tilt columns. Fortunately, they're not very expensive from Ford (~$45 for both). Unfortunately, they're nothing but a PITA to change out because you have to disassemble the steering column to do it. I've never seen a photo article on the process, and the last time I had to do it (~8 years ago), I didn't have a digital camera. If I ever do it again, I'll be sure to add it to the other ones in my signature link.
