2006 6.0L fuel problem

I have a 2006 F250. Everything is pretty much stock. At any rpm, the rpm fluctuates. For instance, at idle it acts like someone taps the gas for a second and then steadies out. Then the rpm will dip to just above 500 or so. It does this at all rpms. On the freeway, I'll put on cruise control and still watch the rpm fluctuate slightly. I recently got AutoEnginuity. I made the rpm 750 for a minute and it still fluctuated.

About once every 20 or so times of running, the engine will not start. I think it's starving for fuel but can't figure out why. I'm new to my scan tool so I'm sure I'm missing a few things that I could look at. It doesn't appear to have any significant differences when it's cranking and not starting vs when it cranks and starts.

I replaced the IPR valve screen, although it didn't look bad when I replaced it. FICM appears to be reading 47-48 volts consistently whether cranking, running etc. I'm not quite sure where to turn and any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

have you changed both the fuel filters? the hfcm loads up with garbage, drain it, spray a can of carb cleaner (using the red tube) up in there ( the water in fuel drain).

Thanks for the response. Replaced both fuel filters a couple weeks ago, just cleaned EGR. Problem appears to be getting worse. Went to the store just now. When I came out, it would turn over, start but only get to 200rpm or so before dying. Did this about 10 times. I waited a few minutes, wiggled the connection on the ICP and started right up. It's tough to diagnose because it's not consistent.

I'm thinking you have icp issues, and not fuel issues.

How do you go about diagnosing as ICP? or do you just replace it and hope that's it?

Unplug the ICP sensor and see if that corrects the problem. If there is any oil in the electrical connection the ICP sensor and pigtail must be replaced.

well the quick and dirty way is when its acting up just go ahead and unplug the icp sensor. if it seems to smooth out or you are able to start the truck (during the times that it seems to refuse to start) then chances are its the icp sensor and or pigtail. now since you also have an autoenginuity you can also bring up your icp psi, icp desired, and icp volts. koeo the icp volts should be somewhere around .24 and the truck needs to see at least 500psi before it commands the truck to fire the injectors. at a warm idle your icp psi should be around 600-700psi and the ipr valve in the 23-24% range. by the info you've given it does sound like an icp sensor, and if there is oil inside the connector then you may as well order up the pigtail also.

Are you running OEM filters and caps?

Yes. Everything OEM. Going to play with AE and see what I find. It just never seems to fail when I want it to so that I can troubleshoot it.

While you're watching ICP volts and psi on AE, have someone wiggle the ICP harness.

Thanks for the input. Just did the AE test. KOEO, voltage reads .24 volts. Jumps to .91 on starting. Fuel pressure is at about 580 at idle. Disconnected ICP, pressure immediately jumped to 870. When plugged back in pressure slowly went back to 580. voltage on reconnecting was 1.15 but settled back to .86 or so. Voltage is not constant at idle but maybe it's not supposed to be..?

No oil in ICP connector. IPR valve settles out to 23.83. This it with it running right though. Haven't gotten it to not start on me when I had my laptop handy to run AE. As far as running AE when it has stalled, which parameters would you recommend? ICP voltage, pressure, IPR percentage? Is there anyway to have it record more than just the four parameters you're watching to be able to export to Excel? Would be nice to be able to also have accelerator position and rpm along with above parameters and just take it driving.

Also thinking about high pressure rail drains (aka dummy plugs). Any thoughts? Would you also do stand pipes while you have the valve cover gaskets off?

It doesn't sound like you have a high pressure oil problem so I wouldn't worry about getting into your valve cover just yet. Your numbers seem normal when running its right so you have to compare those numbers to when it's not. Like said earlier, the easiest way to diagnose the icp sensor is to just simply unplug it next time the idle is fluctuating or the truck won't start and go from there
