hello. I am thinking about getting a 1 ton, 1988, with 460 and 5 speed. my Ford friend says the 5 speed is like overdrive...revs drop, gas mileage better. but all on here say 7-12 mpg.???? I have a 1982 Ford 1 ton with a 400-4spd. very poor on gas milage and I thought the 88 would have more power and better mileage..?? right or wrong..thanks
I just got 90 f350 CC 4x4 a month ago. 10 mpg at best It is an over drive. like .74 or close. If you want fuel economy get a 1/2 ton with a big six. My last one was a 97 cc 4x4 460 with an e4od it could get 12 on why trips with no city driving moving like grandpa. 8-10 around town. with 33 road tires.
Big blocks drink gas and have tons of torque but not much horse power. My new one will break the tires loose in second (granny trans) at low rpms That is not hp that is the 400 ftlb of torque
I got 11.1 coming back from California in July. '88 F350… C-6… 4.10 gears running 62 mph on the cruise.
Your '82 has the camshaft retarded about 8 degrees for cleaner emissions. If you want better eceonomy with that truck install a new timing set and advance it 2-4 agrees. All the difference in the world.

The 88 will have Slightly more power and SLIGHTLY better fuel milage than your 82(even though the 460 wasn't even an option in 82)
An EFI 460 will get 8-12 on a regular basis, Don't expect miracles
Last time i checked mixed city and highway (80mph) I got 10.1mpg. I figure anything in the double digits is awesome for a big block, I had a suburban with the 454 and 4:10s and got 9mpg going 67 mph
Not that it really helps, but I remember my mom's '77 Lincoln Town Car with the carburated 460 got 10.1 on the average, and it required premium fuel. It had the 3-speed C6 automatic transmission.
