Hey yall. i'm looking for a 250 or 350 with a 300 I6 in it but can't find many. I'm finding tons of em with the 460 though. So i'm interested in it...
What kind of real world gas milage are you 460 guys getting?
Are there any inherant problems with the 460? Any things to look out for?
And are the parts hard to find or more expensive?
I'm not new to the auto world but new to knowing details on Ford's engines. I don't see them often enough to really know anything about them.
Thanks again for any help,
Erik
My '86 F250 HD Extra Cab, with 460, T19, 4x4, 4.10 gears, and 35" mudders gets about 10 mpg around town, and 13 or so on the highway. If I take it easy on the hills, and keep the speed to 65 or less, I have managed 14.5 mpg a couple times, but its on long trips, and I really have to watch the speed. Cruising at 70 mph drops the highway mileage to about 10, 75 mph drops it to 7-8. I really need to swap in a ZF............
My 86 460 t19 4x4 355's gets about 10mpg.empty or loaded. My 460 loves to work,pulling heavy loads.
Yes the zf trans is an overdrive trans, but you have to mAke sure you get one with the right bell housing aaa they are not removable.there is the small block version (300i 6 ,302,351) the bigblock 460,400/351m and the diesl.

NO the 300,302,351w is one pattern, the 351/400m,370,429&460 are one pattern and the diesel is a different one again
And FWIW i could only get 13 MPG w a 96 F350 460 5spd, 3:55 gears and 33's doing 65-70 for 7 hours straight and 456 miles
11 miles empty traveling 70 mph. 9 miles pulling 5er @ 60 mph as much as possible sometimes only get up to 50 with head winds and such put my foot in the throttle and it's down from there. not much on going slow or easy so don't know if it can do any better...
