new leaf springs or level

My 96 front end is sagging pretty bad. I was thinking of going with an add a leaf but then I was looking on truck springs site and found a replacement leaf that was 3 instead of the 2. But I need some insight. And could someone help me locate where a part number would be at?

If you need springs, go back with the original style 2 leaf ones. A set of 3 leaf will ride like a log wagon! But you probably don't need springs. All new bushings in the axle and new bushings in the springs and spring hangers will do wonders. AND you may not need that either. A good alignment will help some. AND you may not need that. Are you looking at it after you've backed up? These TTB front ends do weird things in reverse!

Well I'm just looking at the fact that the truck sat from 01 to 2011 in my grandpas yard. And I want to either level it or lift it in reality but leveling it is more in my budget but even then I hear stiff rides and major alignment whether its a full leaf or ord zero rates

Yea, if it has sat 10 years the bushings are shot, completely dry rotted. A full replacement is in order. Your springs are probably just fine. Zero rates?

The pivot bushing in the center is good the rest are shot but it would seem difficult to replace the spring bushings and the pivots on the front of the leaf or is it not difficult?

Difficult is a relative term. Difficult for me? No. I work on that kind of stuff all the time. I have plenty of tools and a place to do it. Difficult for you? Maybe more so. Or not. It may take more time and a little more sweat but if you have basic mechanical abilities I bet you can do it. And this place is here to help.

I don't know anything specifically about these, but adding a spring with no rate would be like putting a piece of flat metal in there. The only thing you would accomplish would be a tiny bit of lift and an alignment nightmare. Adding a regular leaf does all this plus a terrible ride.

Oh and another thing. That bushing in the center is probably in much worse condition than you think it is. If you are replacing all the others it would be silly not to do it too.

I've never been a fan of adding a leaf to very worn out springs. Your not really fixing the problem, just kind of putting a band aid on it. I understand why people do it though, easier and cheaper.

That's why I was just going to go with new front leafs up front and while its up do the pivot bushings also then an alignment. Is there an OEM part number listed on the front part of the leaf? I can't recall at the moment and I have access to a hoist and basic tools and pretty mechanicly inclined

Do you know what your spring code is? It's located on the driver side door jam. Lower right hand side of the VIN sticker will say SPR and underneath that will be the actual code. That basically gives the exact setup (suspension wise) that you currently have, as long as everything is still stock.

That's good. You should be able to do this no problem.

Listen to Junior. He knows his stuff.
