Shop around as you never know what you'll find. I bought this for the frame, front suspension and the sterling rear. got a good 351efi with 5 spd and lots of work/project metal. Cost me $450, its an 89.
Here's my f100 with a flat bed that the PO made. It's not made from steel, but does the job and looks pretty cool IMO. At some point I'd like a stock bed, but like you said, a good one is hard to find in some areas.
This bed though was really rough and funny story, I bought the flat deck first. So found this ol' '78 with 4.9L 435 205 d44 9" named Beauty (shh, don't wanna hurt her feelings).
He used PT for the framing of the flat bed, 2x4's running in the center (front to back) with 2x6's along the sides, along the back of the cab, and one in the center notched for the wheels. 3/4" plywood for the tool boxes and deck, and 1" boards for the rails. Also 4x6's front and rear, but 2x6 would be fine I think, especially if it's temporary till you find a good bed. Prolly save some money and get KD too, just paint it.
Those are some nice dents guys. Piston Honda, that's probably the classiest all wood flatbed I've seen in awhile. Looks really cool. I'm hoping I get lucky when I go home next, as the scrapyard by my parents house has a factory flatbed 64 ford, and they are doing a big sale: anything you pull yourself and can balance on a wheelbarrow for 40 bucks. If I can score that, I can spend the rest of the cash I had allotted towards the flatbed for some new fenders, flooring, etc..
