i have a 78 f250 4x4. the fenders are rusted out as are a couple of dings in the rear quarters. i am trying to weigh my options. i do not want to get rid of the current bed because the core is still good. just the fenders. any help please!
Tell me about it. My problem is that mine is totally rust free, but both sides look like a couple drunk guys with sledge hammers went to town. In the interest of saving money, I decided to do the following: make a stepside. I bought 2" thinwall tubing, and am going to make the top rails and stake pockets out of it. Then I am going to rivet skin on that. On the factory bed, I am going to take it apart at the 2 seams that run on the edges of the bed floor. Once all that is done, I am going to bolt the newly made sides to the factory flange on the floor, and make wheelwells. I estimate I can do it all for about $150. I would love a factory bed, but I think I can do this and make it look respectable, and save a lot. My theory in all this is that it will still be 4x8' and then I will add toolboxes to the outside of the bed. Then I can still haul about what you would normally haul in a bed, and not lose the little space around the wheelwells. This is just my idea. There are others, like a flatbed. I will try and post pictures when it is done. Good luck, Ted
Are you talking about inner fenders being rusted or do you have a stepside?
Inner fenders can be bought through rust repair panel places and I think fender repair patch panels can be had for the stylesides also.

My '79 has the same problems starting above the rear wheel wells. I bought some patch panels and plan to install them some time this summer. There is a thread somewhere in this forum that covers installing them. I was at my favorite bone yard yesterday and saw a couple of new additions that had ok beds on them. One was rust free, but needed a bit of body work to make it good..... maby more than it is worth.
