Description of Defect :

Description of the Defect : In some of the affected vehicles, the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump may wear out and fail, resulting in a high temperature condition within the motor electronics system. This would invoke a Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM) strategy that can result in a sudden partial or full loss of motive power in order to protect the vehicle powertrain. After a sufficient cool-down time, the vehicle will restart.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition. Description of the Safety Risk : The vehicle may experience a sudden partial or full loss of motive power while

driving caused by the FMEM strategy during a high temperature condition within the electronics cooling system. If this occurs, the vehicle’s braking and steering systems will continue to operate normally. However, this condition

can result in a sudden stall-like condition while driving. An engine stall without warning while driving may increase the risk of a crash.

Description of the Cause : Supplier quality issues have resulted in some of the MEC pumps being built with

motor brushes that experience a high wear rate. Brushes that wear prematurely may eventually result in a loss of pump function.

Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : A partial or full loss of motive power is accompanied by audible

and visual indicators in the instrument cluster.

Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Robert Bosch LLC

Address : 15000 North Haggerty Road

Plymouth MI 48170

Country : US

The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573

Part 573 Safety Recall Report 14V-526 Page 3

Chronology :

April 2014: Ford identified reports related to driveability issues, instrument cluster messages instructing the driver to stop the vehicle, and loss of power.

May 2014: This issue was opened in Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) for analysis.

June – August 2014: Ford continued to review field data to understand the cause of the driveability and loss of power reports. It was found that variability in the material used for brushes inside the Motor Electronics Coolant Pump could result in an elevated and increasing rate of pump failure. It was found that certain pumps containing the potentially suspect brushes could fail prematurely after many years in service.

On August 25, 2014, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.

Description of Remedy :

Description of Remedy Program : Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle(s) to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the Motor Electronics Coolant Pump inspected. If the original equipment pump is found, it will be replaced with an improved brushless pump. If the pump has already been replaced in service with the brushless pump, no additional repair is required. There will be no charge to owners for this service.

Ford’s general reimbursement plan for the cost of remedies paid for by vehicle owners prior to notification of a safety recall was provided to the Agency on February 20, 2013.

The ending date for reimbursement eligibility for the cost of remedies paid for by vehicle owners per Ford’s general reimbursement plan is April 30,

2015.

How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The replacement pump is a brushless motor design.

Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : NR

Let down by dealer once again!

Once again Ford dealers let me down... I took my 2006 Escape to the dealer for the recall and they wouldn't replace it because there were no trouble codes in the computer. I explained to them that the pump has stuck before and we banged on it to get it going as my daughter who uses it is 2 hours away at college. They claimed there were no codes in the computer. Well I had just replaced the battery about a month earlier and that erases all computer codes! So now I have to send my daughter back to school 2 hours away with a car destined to fail and the dealer won't complete the recall. Real nice Ford...

With the advent of OBD II ~1997, replacing the battery has zero effect on code history retention... same with the odometer. If your specific vehicle is not exhibiting the symptoms (and the computer cannot substantiate) for which the recall is addressing, the dealer wouldn't be reimbursed by Corporate for said work.

You very well likely have a different problem for which banging on it "fixes" it.

Try a different Ford dealer.

Funny that you say that, when I asked about it the dealer agreed that it erases the codes!
As far as tapping on the pump, I read about doing that on another forum and it indeed worked... The over heated brushes must stick and if you dislodge them the pump starts to function again and the warning light goes away.

Trust me, the dealer has its hands tied. Recalls have to be performed exactly like Ford describes or there is legal liability issues. There is not enough of the brushless pumps to repair every hybrid so Ford is limiting replacement to failed pumps until their supplier can produce enough. Right now that is estimated to be mid 1st quarter of 2015 so prob around February-early March. If it does act up again do not disconnect the battery or clear the codes. It should set a code the first time it fails but it may take 2 times.

There are some codes and I don't know which ones, I've read that they can "only" be cleared by the circuit, module, etc. that set the code.

Disconnecting the battery normally doesn't erase the codes but if one grounds out the positives cable for a period of time or turns some load ON like headlamps, it'll discharge the capacitor(s) that normally help to retain the code.
