Ok just bought a 1995 f250 with a 351w. If was wondering what low cost mods in could do to get a little bit more power out of it. The po put a very nice set of shorty headers on it with all the air pump provisions ect the rest of the exaust is bone stock it also has a K&n cold air intake not that it helps at all.every thing else on the truck is bone stock all egr air pump ect is functional.
Here's what I've was thinking of doing to it.
Electric fans
Air pump bypass
Block off egr(thoughs on that)
Cat back exaust cherry bomb or some thing
The 351 in the trucks suffer from restricted exhaust ports in the heads and a pitiful cam. Not a whole lot you can do without taking the engine apart. A decent cam and a port and polish would work wonders for it.
E fans are a good way to get some power just be sure to invest in a good quality thermostatic controller for the fan/fans. As for the smog pump bypass you can do it in a heartbeat but its more to clean up the engine bay than it really is to gain power unless your pump is locking up, another thing to if you still have the stock oem cats without the smog pump it will eventually cause them to clog up on you as well. Don't bother blocking off the egr if your using your truck as a daily driver, keep it hooked up and functional as it helps with fuel mileage while cruising. As for a muffler its really all in personal taste.
Umm that would be a no, it has to either been run via an aftermarket temp sensor and relay that is configured for a certain temperature or you set the desire temp for it to cut on and off yourself.
Would it be ok to wire it so the fan runs when only the engine runs like run a relay and use some thing such as the fuel pump to trigger the fan relay. I realize the fuel pump ain't ideal Cuz it runs with key on for a few seconds but I can think n of any thing else
Not much you can do for cheap on the engine itself aside from headers and bumping the timing slightly. As was mentioned, the stock cam and heads won't let it make much power. That's why mine is still stock, but it'll get some go fast parts at rebuild time. Although I ain't really trying to go fast... just nice to have extra torque on hand!
You can redo the exhaust from the headers back and get rid of that wheezy stock muffler and replace the cats with hi-flow's or whatever. I have glasspacks on mine. They're Thrush instead of Cherry Bomb, basically the same thing except CB's have internal louvers and are directional where with the Thrush ones you can just put them in either way.
Just installed a high flow cat and force 2 exhaust on my 95 f150 w/351. There is a little extra pep, especially when cruising at just below 2000rpm in the 60+ mph range. The truck was a dud here before and now it's more responsive will be good for the highway. It doesn't seem like the gas mileage is suffering either. More testing to be done there. I want to do headers after xmas but I think I will have to convert to Mass Air to do this.
I think rounding it all out with a good cold air intake is going to give me some more usable performance. I know alot of people think there isn't much to be gained with a CAI but I think paired with a good flowing exhaust why not have the intake flowing a little better as well. Air in and Air out efficiency. These are your basic mods, $$$ is being spent and I'm not going to be winning any drag races but I am getting closer to what I think the ideal performance with this truck can be.
If you just bought it check all your gaskets, oil pan, water pump, etc. A bit to be gained from just making sure everything is sealed up nicely.

Aftermarket cold air intakes are junk and pull nothing but hot air, you'd be better off with the I6/460 air intake tube for the plastic box and a good fresh paper filter. Also you don't need to convert to mass air just for a set of headers, speed density will play nice with headers.
Really, well then I would suggest to 86 maybe look for some used gt40 heads that should add some power. I wasn't aware of the 460 intake tube idea, thanks!

Not a problem I'd just rather see you spend that extra money on actual power making parts and not something that sucks hot air. Yeah I've got a set of gt40 heads as well, my father is good with porting work as he used to port the E7 heads that came stock on the 302 all the time so he's gonna port them up for me to help give my 351w (whenever I get the block to a machine shop and find out what I need down low) a little extra power as well. But at this point I'm just ing.
So the air intake tubes form the i6/460 is less restrictive than the 302/351w. My truck is missing the stock filter box it's self it has this but k&n brand http://m.ebay.com/itm/380983083593?nav=SEARCH
Yes that is correct, that filter right there is nothing more than an overpriced hot air sucker that looks cool under the hood, but does nothing for you in terms of performance.
