If you can feel when the truck shifts, it will feel like it shifted again. is this a true statement of the E4OD tranny. they way the lockup torque convertor works. just had my E4OD rebuilt and this is exactly how it feels to me.
yes.if the builder installed a shift kit you should feel all shifts along with the converter lock which will feel more like a semi shift.the converter wont lock until the trans shifts 2 times (after it's entered 3rd gear) at approx 35 mph.
if the builder installed a shift kit which included the pump modifications, converter lockup might also be greatly firmer than stock......if not,it will feel oem mushy and might feel soft, long and drawn out still.
take off slowly in D (already in 1st gear.)
you'll feel the first shift.trans entering 2nd gear around 20-25 mph.
continue and you'll feel the trans shift it's second time into 3rd around 25-30 mph.
shortly after the 2nd shift felt (into 3rd) you'll feel a "funny" shift (converter locking) making it feel as if the trans shifted 3 times now.
lastly the trans will enter it's final shift into OD making it feel as if you just felt 4 gears (where the old school c6 would have just felt 2 shifts and all done.)
now try the same thing again, only this time do it with your hazard/flashers ON.
this will keep the converter from locking and now without it locking,it will help you identify the shifts and the converter locking.
(this works with 9th gen [92-94] idi diesel trucks anyway.)
repeat until you learn how your new trans now functions, now that you can feel the shifts.
thats it. at first i thought there was something wrong but quickly figured what it seemed to be doing. i cant remember it doing that since i bought the truck 8 or so years ago, it had 103,000 miles on it then. well then go to know its working right.
While cruising down the road in OD, with left foot(hold the gas pedal steady speed) just lightly tap the brake pedal just for the brake lights to come on, the torque converter will unlock then will relock back up after the "tap of the brakes". It feels like a small shift down and back up.
I see about 100 to 300 RPM rev up when the torque converter unlocks.
ok, does it lock in every gear, it feels like it does after shifting into second and third, plus overdrive. the rebuilder said i have six gears. guess it shifts then within a second it locks.

im sure you misunderstood.anyone capable of rebuilding the E40D would know it only has 4 gears and a locking converter.
90 f150. no he said it was like i had 6 forward gears. i understood him to mean that once it shifted into 2nd, then the convertor would lockup, lowering the rpm, and the same with 3rd and overdrive. because it sure feels like a double shift, when i give it some gas, not flooring it, but giving it some pedal, it will shift then a split second later it feels like it locks up. not really noticeable when just driving easy. or is it that it only locks up above a certain speed. maybe it just me driving my truck for the last 100,000 miles it has changed and now it completely different, much firmer.
It will always unlock before a shift, then lock once the shift has completed.
Hmm... it might be hydraulically capable, but I ain't ever felt or heard either of the two E4's that I've owned lock up in 2nd gear. Neither manual 2nd or auto 2nd. Is this something that only certain trucks had programmed?
I would think that in 2nd gear it would stay unlocked to take advantage of the torque multiplication by the converter til it get's to 3rd (direct drive 1:1 ratio).
