Does Ford use the same transmission in the E250 as the E350? or different transmission based on motor size ? Looking at buying a newer E series, current van is 02 E350 with a 5.4.
Also, any brake size difference ?
I believe newer 350's use a 5 speed trans and they likely have bigger brakes. (I'm an E150 guy so I'm not the best source of info here, and the year of the newer van may matter.)
There is a specification section on the FTE forum here:
Would you know which tranny would be used with the 4.6L and 5.4l engines? Would the 4.6L be ok for light towing ( say a trailer and a 1500lb. load ?)
Check the spec pages....I know they have the towing capacity listed for all the vans at least for some years. I would guess that even the 4.6 would be rated to pull 5000 lbs. But you have to consider the load weight, terrain, and your expectations with regard to towing.
I looked at the 07 specs and the 5.4 lists both the 4 speed (4R100?) and 5 speed autos, so the specs may not always be clear.
I have an '02 E150 with a 4.6 and have never towed but have friends who have 4.6's in vans and pickups and do tow, and they are at best lukewarm. My prior van was a Savana with a 350, similar output to a 5.4, and that van had a lot more low end and midrange grunt. (And I miss that grunt but like the gas mileage of the 4.6.) The 4.6 will need to rev to make power although that won't hurt the engine if you are towing within specs. Gas mileage when towing with the 4.6 might be lower than the 5.4, but lightly loaded the 4.6 is a great gas mileage motor.
