I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum first of all. I have a 1986 F150 it has the Ford 9" rear, but I'm not sure what the front axle is or how to tell what kind or year. I know I need both of the answers if I get new lockouts or different gears. The previous owner took the independent one out and put a straight axle in. Can anybody help me out and inform me.
Hello Tom, the independent front suspension was taken out and replaced with a straight axle from the late 70'so is all I know. I need to find out what I have so I can try to figure out what gears I have.
if there is a tag on one of the carrier bolts post the numbers off it or a picture of it and we should be able to decode it for you.
otherwise it is a guessing game. it could either be a D-44 or a D-60 but if it is a 5 lug axle i am betting it is a D-44.
Well I looked at the chart, going by that it could be either a D-44, 60, 70, or 80. Someone replaced the cover with a chrome one so there are no tags, but I'm trying to find the other numbers on the axle to try and figure it out. Someone told me my axle was upside down can it even work that way?
