A few years ago, I was driving down a main thoroughfare here in Dallas at about 10pm, and saw a car swerving all over the place, driver drunk as a skunk. I was able to get in front of him, and I started gradually slowing down, and we both slowed to a stop in the far right hand lane. He was so plastered, he didn't really even question it. I called 911 and spoke with someone at the police sub-station that was only a few miles down the very road we were on.
I described the situation to the officer, and got totally chewed-out! He said, by stopping this man, and us both sitting there in a lane on the road, if anyone hit us, the responsibility would be mine, and if this drunk got hurt, he could sue me for endangering his life. The officer said that I absolutely was not to go back and talk to the man or have any other interaction with him. The entire conversation seemed to be directed at how I was totally wrong to stop him like I did.
I got this officer's name, and described the vehicle, and told him that when this blue van kills someone down the road, the blood would be on his hands.
I was very angry at being told to leave the scene and drive away. I tried to do the right thing, and it turned out to be the wrong thing. Just like chasing after a drunk driver, it could have all come back on you.
Now, I just call in the number and let the chips fall where they may.
Up here killing a carload of sober innocent people is almost a status symbol. Last week a guy got 8 yrs for 3 dead. 3 years for drunk driving, 5 years for the 3 sober people he killed. longest sentance I've heard of in this province in the 13 years I've lived here. We're all taught the drunk driving is illegal so in my opinion killing someone when drunk is the same thing as murder. I've lost a few friends to these morons to and I still miss thier company and friendships. May my friends rest in peace and may these drunks burn in hell if it exists.
I like the thought of taking the impaired driver off the road if possible, I've done the follow and call the cops thing too, couple times nothing happened couple times I've been thanked. Just do what you can at your comfort level, I know we all want to do more but if you're not prepared to defend yourself in what could quickly escalate to a life or death situation then take the safe road. Things seem to keep spiraling south and there's so many aholes that've just lost their damn minds anymore....
FYI, a 911 call is the only lawful call that you can make on a cell phone while driving in California.
Next time, keep em on the line.
And as far as antagonizing the situation goes, it can further the situation by either a freeway/city street chase at higher speeds, or even him pulling a gun and ending up shooting you or someone else.
You did as much as you could or should.
In my drunk driving days, i usually had 2-3 loaded guns in my vehicle.
