I have used hockey pucks for various mounts. Not sure of your dimensions needed. They saw and drill ok, and some old mud flap or conveyor belting can fill the gaps. Another way to add height is layers of fiberglass window screen to layers of polyurethane marine sealant like sikaflex or 3m 5200. That stuff is messy, but it is bombproof. Maybe too white trashy for most builds...

Because of the complexity of the mounts pre-48, I would recommend sticking with the oem style mounts. Just choose the right wood and it will outlast you!
