I have used hockey pucks for various mounts. Not sure of your dimensions needed. They saw and drill ok, and some old mud flap or conveyor belting can fill the gaps. Another way to add height is layers of fiberglass window screen to layers of polyurethane marine sealant like sikaflex or 3m 5200. That stuff is messy, but it is bombproof. Maybe too white trashy for most builds...

Because of the complexity of the mounts pre-48, I would recommend sticking with the oem style mounts. Just choose the right wood and it will outlast you! . After 47 - the mounts are more traditional and GB's suggestions will be what I'll be using.

I'm a woodworker all day. all year. I'm pretty sick of wood on the weekends so I have to dream up stuff to avoid my normal shop tools..... The grass is always greener.
