C6 transmission fluid

I think it's a 1974 transmission. Type F fluid or the dextron? Is there a drain plug and a fill plug? Can I drain the torque converter? I've been googling for a couple hours now....

Some trns. pans have drain plugs, some don't. if yours does not just loosen the pan bolts and remove all but the 2 on one end or the other allowing the fluid to spill out into a catch container. Then remove the pan itself to access the filter that you will see when its open. replace filter and pan gasket (try and find a rubber type pan gasket)replace pan and torque to spec. On the torque converter, again some have a drain plug some do not. To see you must remove the dust cover located on the lower front of the bell housing, once you have removed the dust cover, you can rotate the torque converter flex plate assembly by bumping the starter to slowly turn the assembly, bump and check, bump and check, until you either find or don't find a bolt that sits by itself towards the outside front edge of the T. C.. If you find a drain bolt bump the motor until it is at the lowest point and remove to drain ( note it is not one of the bolts that secure the TQ), then replace it and replace the dust cover. When putting in the new fluid, pore it in the hole the transmission dip stick goes into. I put in 3 quarts, then start the motor for a minute going thru the gears to circulate the fluid then turn off the motor to add the remaining fluid, check the fluid level with the motor running in park after going thru the gears. I check often when I'm getting close to the recommended quantity. Im no expert on a C6 so if anyone sees an error please correct my method

Most auto parts stores have a universal drain plug you can put in the pan once you pull it. Makes the next change much easier.

DEXRON (no 'T')

Originally the C6 would call for type F.
If it was rebuilt and a different fluid was used, stick with that.
I am in a similar boat. 1970 F100, rebuilt C6, no idea what was used after rebuild. Going to stick with non-type F.

type f or ???

the ford c-4 and c-6 came with type 'F' transmission fluid.
it gave the transmission firmer shifts and reduced band/clutch wear... using the dexron/mercron fluids will soften the shifts and with a softer shift, cause a increase in the band/clutch wear... not such as most people would know the difference. as most people just have a transmission worked on when they fail...
